Product Description


MelaCollTM Hydroxyethyl Methyl Cellulose (HEMC), also known as Methyl Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (MHEC), is a non-ionic cellulose ether that is made from natural polymer cellulose through a series of etherification reactions. Our HEMC products are excellent in water solubility, water retention, surface activity, thickening, film formation, adhesion, suspension, and high-temperature resistance, etc. Our products have been widely used in various industries, including tile adhesives, grouts, skim coat/wall putty, cement renders, gypsum-based products, cement-based mortars, water-based latex coating, and oil drilling, etc.

Major Differences Between MelaColl HPMC And HEMC


  • MelaColl HEMC has a higher gel temperature (70-85°C): The gel temperature is closely related to the thermal stability. With a higher gel temperature, our HEMC products have outstanding performance stability for constructions under high temperatures.
  • MelaColl HEMC has better hydrophobicity or water retaining rate due to that there are more hydrophilic groups in the structure of HEMC; therefore, it has better effects in water retention, construction workability, crack resistance, and sag resistance compared to our HPMC with the same viscosities. This difference is more evident in hot construction environments.

  • Tile Adhesives: MelaColl high viscosity grades are recommended for the tile adhesive to effectively improve its adhesion, water retention, sag resistance, and workability features.
  • Wall Putty/Skim Coat: MelaColl medium viscosity products are recommended for the skim coat. It can improve product mixing, enhance product lubricity and workability. It can also prevent cracks and improve sag resistance, water retention, and open time of the construction.
  • ETICS/EIFS: Our products are widely used in EIFS adhesives and base coats to improve the adhesion and cohesion features of the products. It can enhance water retention, prolong open time, and improve construction workability and consistency.
  • Cement Plaster: Our medium viscosity products are used in cement renders to improve water retention, workability, sag resistance, final consistency, and production rates.
  • Flooring System: Our low viscosity product is recommended for the application in self-leveling flooring compounds to improve the rheology (e.g. fluidity), leveling, and workability.
  • Gypsum-based Building Materials: Our medium viscosity products are recommended in gypsum applications to improve workability, water retention, sag resistance, and adhesion to different substrates.
  • Detergents: Our high viscosity grades are recommended for detergent application to control the thickening, rheology, emulsification, and optical clarity properties of the products.
